We’re thrilled to spotlight Sam, another one of our esteemed MEM of the Year nominees and an active NAMEM Council Member representing the West Midlands.

With 28 years of dedicated service in medical education, Sam’s journey began at Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, where she initially took on a part-time role within the education team. It didn’t take long for her to discover her passion for medical education—a field she’s remained committed to ever since. Over nearly three decades, Sam has held numerous roles, culminating in her appointment as Head of Medical Education in January 2023.

Throughout her career, Sam has witnessed and contributed to the evolution of medical education, from small beginnings to a robust, highly integrated function within the organisation. Among her many achievements, she is especially proud of:

·       Expanding clinical skills and simulation training

·       Integrating education more deeply across the organisation

·       Growing the Foundation Training Programme and faculty

She credits her success to the incredible team of educators, clinicians, and administrative staff she works with—individuals who consistently go above and beyond in their commitment to delivering quality education.

Navigating the complexities of medical education is no small task. Sam notes that one of the greatest challenges she has faced is balancing the diverse needs of stakeholders while staying agile in a fast-paced, ever-changing healthcare environment. Despite these pressures, her adaptability and steady leadership have helped her team thrive.

Sam offers this advice to colleagues across the field:

"Never be afraid to ask for help, advice, or guidance. We’re fortunate to have a wealth of experienced professionals in medical education across the country. I’ve reached out for support many times—it’s how we learn, grow, and ultimately improve the services we provide."
